Stephen Colbert began his final monologue before The Late Show goes on hiatus for the rest of the summer by taking another victory lap over the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago.
Specifically, the host noticed a new pattern emerging in the way the former president’s biggest defenders have changed their tune over the past few days. “It started as ‘there’s nothing to see here’ and quickly turned into ‘everything you see was put here by the FBI,'” he said. “And all the former president’s supporters have taken the bait.”
After playing a montage of Trump allies spreading this conspiracy in the conservative media, Colbert said, “You know when you accuse someone of tampering with evidence before they say they’ve even found anything? That’s when you know they’re going to find something.
“So how did the FBI agents bring in 12 boxes of evidence that they took?” he asked. “Ainsley Earhardt has a very stupid theory.”
The Fox & Friends co-host pointed out this week that FBI agents arrived with backpacks, asking, “What was in those backpacks?”
“Good question, Ainsley!” Colbert replied. “Everybody knows you have to search the cops before they search you. That’s why I always tell the TSA, “Hold on, mister, I’m going to hit your junk first.”
The host later explained that “in order to do the search, the FBI had to produce a search warrant, and in order to take anything, they had to give the former president a detailed receipt for everything they took.” And while Trump could release those documents and “the mystery and the intrigue could be cleared up,” Colbert added, “obviously he doesn’t want that, because as long as we don’t know anything, he’s free to say anything.”
That’s why Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that the Justice Department has filed a request to unseal those documents. “The former president has until tomorrow to file a motion in court to stop that from happening,” Colbert said, “which would mark the first time he’s ever turned down an offer of full release.”
