Storm in Manitoba: How much rain fell in Manitoba on Tuesday

Southern Manitoba was hit by severe thunderstorms Tuesday morning, bringing more than 100 millimeters (mm) of rain to parts of the province.

According to Environment Canada, 101.5 mm of rain fell near Matlock, while Portage la Prairie received 81 mm and the Woodlands received 76 mm. The weather agency also reports that Tuesday’s storm brought 51mm of rain on Cypress River and 36.6mm on Morris.

Environment Canada notes that winds were possibly 100 km/h. However, the only station data they have shows wind gusts of 89 km/h at Portage la Prairie.

Severe thunderstorms are under watch for some Manitoba communities, including Dugald, Selkirk and Steinbach, as of Tuesday afternoon.

The statement said conditions in these regions are favorable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that can produce strong winds, heavy rain and damaging hail.

Environment Canada notes that thunderstorms passed through southern Manitoba on Tuesday morning, with those storms already leaving the province. An unstable air mass remains over parts of southern and eastern Manitoba and thunderstorms are expected to develop again.

As for outages, about 2,000 customers remained without power as of Tuesday afternoon.
