This year’s winners included some Broadway veterans, including Patti Lupone, who received her third Tony Award for her ferocious role as an alcohol-addicted married friend of the chronically unconnected character in Company; and Phylicia Rashad, winning her second Tony for her role as a factory worker in Skeleton Crew. Other Tony Award-winning performers include Joaquin Calukango for her starring role as the owner of a 19th-century New York tavern in Paradise Square; Matt Doyle, who played a groom with a crazy wedding tremor case at Company, and Deirdre O’Connell, who won for her remarkable synchronized performance of her lips as a kidnapping victim in Dana X.
I would like this little award to be a symbol for anyone wondering, “Should I try to do something that can work on Broadway, or that can win me a Tony Award, or do weird art?” What haunts me is that it scares me that I don’t know how to do it, that I don’t know if anyone in the world will know? ”O’Connell said. “Please allow me, standing here, to be a small sign to you from the universe to make the strange art.”
Strange Loop tells the story of a Broadway man named Usher trying to write a musical about Broadway trying to write a musical; his thoughts, many of which are self-critical, are portrayed by six performers, each of whom appears in multiple images. The musical began its life off Broadway with a 2019 production at Playwrights Horizons in collaboration with Productions. After winning the Pulitzer Prize, he had another Broadway production at the Woolly Mammoth Theater Company in Washington, DC, while Jackson continued to polish the show in preparation for this year’s Broadway commercial.
“Six” and “MJ”, although unsuccessful in the race for the best new musical, scored several major victories.
Six won the Tony Award for best result in the first minutes of the ceremony. His music and lyrics were written by two young British artists, Toby Marlowe and Lucy Moss, who came up with the idea while studying at Cambridge University and were discovered by a commercial producer after the first boom at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. . The costume designer of the musical, Gabriela Slade, also won Tony for her Tudor-style outfits and contemporary club attire.
“MJ” also received key awards, including for starring Miles Frost, 22, in his first professional stage role, and for a satisfying choreography by Christopher Wilden, who also directed the musical.
