Strangeways Prison is closed to families who cannot visit – and claims that prisoners cannot bathe or play sports

Strangeways Prison is currently blocked amid allegations that inmates have not been allowed to bathe or train for several days.

IN Manchester evening news understands that the prisoners have been locked in their cells since Monday (June 6th). Families are also barred from visiting Category A Jail in Chittham until Friday (June 10th).

Relatives say they have been informed by family members in prison that they have not been allowed to leave their cells for any reason and that they are being brought food to the door.

The reason for the block has not been officially confirmed. THE MEN turned to the Ministry of Justice for comment.

One woman, whose 19-year-old son is currently a prisoner in prison, said he had told her that the prisoner’s mental health was beginning to deteriorate and that the mood inside had become “very tense”.

Speaking to the MEN, she said: “My son called me last night to say that the prisoner’s mental health was deteriorating quite rapidly. They say they have not bathed and are provided with one meal a day in the cell.

“He said they had not had fresh air since last Wednesday. I know everyone is involved in crime, but they have human rights and that is really not good for their mental health.

“The visits were suspended from Monday to Friday, apparently due to support, but my son and other inmates said they had not seen work in prison.

“It was bad enough, but because of the holidays there will be about eight or nine days without visitors. He says prison officials are coming in to search people’s cells.

In a Facebook post, the charity Partners of Prisoners (POPS) said: “POPS was recently informed that HMP Manchester will be closed for social visits from 6 to 10 June for reasons of support. If this affects you and you need support, please contact the POPS team, who will be happy to help. “

Another woman, whose partner is also a prisoner, said she had been told that the prisoners had been detained for four days and also claimed that they could not bathe or play sports.

She claims that when she rang the prison bell, she heard alarms ringing in the background and the sound of prisoners kicking their doors.

Another man, whose friend is serving a prison sentence, said: “Last week I received a letter saying that the prison was going into a blockade and was expected to last a week, it may take longer. He has been at his door for five days.

“The man I know said today will be his sixth day without a shower. Prison guards bring food to their cell and don’t even let them in for dinner. He says his head is spinning. starts to go.

“They certainly have basic human rights and must be able to take a shower. They didn’t even let them practice. They have a cell phone system so he can call me but he can’t leave his cell phone. “

HM Prison Manchester is a high security men’s prison and is run by Her Majesty’s Prison Service. It is still commonly called Strangeways, which is its former official name.
