Sudbury News: Nordic agencies highlight national HIV testing day

Monday was National HIV Testing Day. Officials say this year’s theme bypasses how testing is an act of self-care.

From clinics to self-testing kits, groups in the north say there are many testing options and everyone should use the most appropriate way for them.

Just over a year ago, the Reseau Access Network in Sudbury partnered with Ready to Know and Get a Kit, groups that provide on-site HIV self-testing kits.

Officials said it was a huge success.

“We get a constant number every month and I can’t reveal those numbers, unfortunately, but as part of the overall study I can tell you that the accumulation of self-tests is part of the amount of tests that are ordered,” said Angel Rees of Reseau Access Network.

“In fact, there are many tests that are sent directly to homes, but I can confirm that they have been active and there are a significant number of people who have chosen to participate in both programs.”

Elsewhere, the AIDS Committee in North Bay and District held an on-site testing clinic to mark the day.

“This is an opportunity for us to remind everyone that testing is essential. If you don’t know you have HIV, you can’t take steps to try to mitigate the spread, “said CEO Stacey Mayhall.

In addition to stopping the spread, knowing if you are positive sooner or later can allow for a better quality of life.

“HIV is not the death penalty it used to be,” Rhys said.

“There is progress in testing and drugs and people can live long, healthy lives by living with HIV.”
