Last night, a witness told ECHO that he saw two men lying on the floor and a group of about 12 to 15 people gathered around them. He said they were both taken to hospital in separate ambulances.

Yates officials are also said to have been among the people to help the two men, who remained lying on the street.

Detective Inspector Chris Saidi said: “Our staff is working to find the person responsible for last night’s horrific incident in which two men were hospitalized.

“If you recognize the man in the photo, please contact us, as we believe he may have information that may be vital to our ongoing investigations.

“We believe this is a targeted attack and we would like to reassure anyone who plans to go to downtown Liverpool tonight to enjoy Saturday night that there is no greater threat to the community.

Liverpool is one of the safest cities in the UK – it has been awarded purple flag status for more than a decade and you are much more likely to enjoy safe and pleasant weather in our city center than to witness or experience horrific accidents like this.

“If you have any information about the Queen’s Square incident last night, please go ahead and help remove dangerous weapons and those who use them from our streets.
