Plus, the return of Jesse Smollett, the surprise appearance of Brandy with Jack Harlow and Mariah Carey joins Latto’s “Big Energy.”
As expected, the hosts and winners, and even the host of the evening, did not shy away from turning to the landmark Supreme Court ruling that rocked America over Sunday weekend at the BET Awards.
On Friday, the country’s highest court overturned Rowe against Wade after nearly 50 years. The decision abolished the right to abortion at the national level, effectively depriving women of it in many countries; with several other countries ordering to join these numbers.

Host Taraji P. Hanson wasted no time in hitting SCOTUS by joining it during her monologue. She was quickly followed by the first host of the evening and winner.
Throughout the night, other women joined the call to action, with Jasmine Sullivan urging men to speak, talk, and join the battle. For the most part, the men did not support her on that request that night.
The evening also included some huge surprise performances, with Jack Harlow joining the Brandy stage after their brief online feud as it was, as well as Lil Wayne. Jesse Smolet spoke from the red carpet about “expansion [his] empire. “
Mariah Carey later appeared for a surprise appearance during Lato’s performance, while Kanye West actually showed the ability to joke with Kim Kardashian during her surprise appearance to honor Didi with an overall achievement award.

Taraji P. Hanson hits SCOTUS, praises Lizo
Going on stage as the host of this year’s festivities, Taraji P. Hanson quickly became the first of several in the night to speak out against Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Rowe against Wade, restoring abortion rights at the state level. Several have already passed laws banning the procedure.
After stopping the show, which opened Lizzo’s performance of “About Damn Time,” Taraji said it was a damn time, Lizzo received all the applause and praise she deserved for her artistry and activism.
“That’s how you start a show!” Taraji said after Lizo’s performance. “All this body positivity up here.”
She then added: “And thank you, Lisa, for the $ 1 million promise to Planned Parenthood.
Just hours after the decision became official, Lizo promised to donate $ 500,000 from her upcoming Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights tour, with Live Nation agreeing to match her donation to $ 1 million.
Taraji went on to say that it was also “a damn time to step up,” citing SCOTUS’s remarkable decision. “We are talking about the damn time [how] guns have more power than women in America. “
“It’s a sad day in America. A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman that can give life – if she chooses,” Taraji said. “It’s a goddamn time to get it off my chest.”

Janelle Monae leads more protests with heartfelt “F — You!”
Shouts against the remarkable decision continued after Taraji’s discovery, with Janelle Monae sending a double message during Pride. She was the first presenter to appear on stage after Taraji’s monologue.
“I would like to give a special, special exclamation to black women, to black queer artists, to black non-binary artists,” she said. “These artists, who make art on our own terms, possess our truths and express themselves freely and without apology in a world that tries to control and control our bodies, my body; and our decisions, my decision.
She added emphatically, “F — th Supreme Court,” offering her middle finger to the Supreme Court (and giving the live broadcast censors something to do). Her message was quickly followed by the winner in her category, Best R&B Pop Artist, Jasmine Sullivan.
After saying he was doing this for women, Jasmine’s message was actually for men. “It’s a difficult time for us right now and I want to talk directly to men: We need everyone,” she told them. “We all need you to stand up. Stand up for us, stand up with us.”
“If you have ever taken advantage of the fact that a woman has made one of the most difficult decisions in her life, which is to terminate a pregnancy, you should be with us,” she insisted. “It’s not just a problem for women. It’s a problem for everyone and we need your support more than ever.”
It was a theme that went through almost every woman who came on stage. After winning the Best New Artist award, Lato said, “It’s about making a pro-choice. It’s about never giving in to someone who controls my body.”
Sistas star New Brown later added: “In light of Roe’s recent turn against Wade and the political developments affecting our nation, it’s time for sistas around the world to hold hands and raise their voices.”

“Wow, I really love this man,” Lil Nas X tweeted in response to a shot of Jack wearing the shirt, according to ET.
