Teachers and doctors are threatening to go out with the railway workers if the government fails to comply with their demands for a pay rise, as Britain’s most militant union leader has raised the prospect of a general strike.
As travelers face a week of railway chaos, teachers have joined the list of those considering voting for the strike, which also includes doctors, nurses, civil servants, local officials, lawyers, postal workers, BT engineers and supervisors.
Teachers have to go on strike if they do not receive a significantly improved pay offer by Wednesday. NHS employees are also likely to receive their award this week.
If their pay does not increase significantly, the Nurses’ Union will consult with its members on what action to take.
