A new poll in Texas, released Wednesday, shows that Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke has increased his support and is lagging behind with a single-digit representation of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott by two terms.
O’Rourke, a former El Paso congressman who was close to ousting Senator Ted Cruz in the 2018 Senate election before failing unsuccessfully to run for the Democratic nomination for the Democratic Party in 2020, won 43% of the vote. registered voters in a Quinnipiac University poll.
The abbot, a former attorney general running for a third four-year term in Texas, had 48 percent support.
Abbott’s 5-point lead over O’Rourke was reduced by a 15-point lead in a December Quinnipiac study. The new survey interviewed respondents from June 9 to 13, following the May 24 mass shooting at Rob Elementary School in Uwalde, Texas, which killed 19 young students and two teachers and injured 17 others.

A Quinnipiac study found that Abbott was up two-digit numbers among men, with O’Rourke holding a similar lead among women. The governor was in the lead among white and 35-year-old voters, while O’Rourke was in the lead among black and Hispanic and 18-34-year-old voters, according to the survey.

Abbott’s ratings were 46% favorable and 45% unfavorable, while O’Rourke was slightly underwater at 38% -43%.

“The race is tightening,” said Tim Maloy, an analyst at the University of Quinipiac study. “Abbot, considered strong in terms of leadership, is slipping. O’Rourke, considered a long-time sympathizer, has benefited from the support of women and young Texans in horse racing to Austin.

Many Texas voters said border security was their main concern, and the governor led O’Rourke on how he would handle the southern border with 53% to 38%. The study also shows that Abbott outperforms O’Rourke in dealing with the economy, the coronavirus pandemic, election laws and weapons policy, although O’Rourke had a slight advantage on abortion.

Abbott had 46% approval and 48% disapproval as a manager. But on the transfer of gun violence, only 31% approve, with 6 out of 10 disapproving.

According to the poll, President Biden was deeply in negative territory, with only a third of Lone Star State voters giving him a thumbs up and 61% disapproving.
Quinnipiac surveyed 1,257 registered voters in Texas for the survey with a total sampling error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
