That wedding anniversary party at Checkers may be the real reason Boris Johnson wants to stay

BORIS Johnson and his wife Carrie are planning a lavish wedding anniversary party at Checkers in the coming weeks – which could be a problem if he is forced to resign with immediate effect.

Many opposition figures and Tories were excited on Thursday morning after the news that the Prime Minister had agreed to stand down but planned to stay on as party leader until a replacement was chosen by October.

This news spread like a cold bucket, with Ruth Davidson (who conveniently took a finger from Johnson) claiming that there was “no way” he could last another few months.

“It’s plain stupid to think it can,” she tweeted. “Someone has to catch up.”

Boris Johnson’s former adviser Dominic Cummings also tweeted: “Evict TODAY or he will cause MASSACRE, even now he is playing for time and will try to stay.

“No ‘dignity’, no ‘interim leadership contest.’

“Raab [should] be interim prime minister until evening.’

Johnson’s determination to stay at No.10 can be explained by an Evening Standard diary published last week.

“Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie are planning a champagne-soaked soiree at Checkers to celebrate their first wedding anniversary,” the writer says they heard.

They noted that due to Covid restrictions, the couple had to limit their wedding guests to just 30 people – and a Number 10 spokesperson promised they would “celebrate their wedding with family and friends next summer”.

According to the newspaper: “The Johnsons have now sent out invitations to the party, which will be held in the coming weeks.”

The Sun reports that the event will take place on July 30.

A source said: “It’s unbelievable that even with all the criticism Johnson has faced regarding integrity and honesty, one of the reasons he stayed was to host his wedding party at Checkers. The Johnsons should do the decent thing and find another place.”

Meanwhile, a Johnson ally told The Mirror: “The Prime Minister has a strong sense of duty and will continue to serve his country until a new leader is elected to continue his duty to the public.”

But it’s hard to hold a fancy event at the Prime Minister’s official country residence if you’re not the Prime Minister…
