A mother described her devastation after her 11-year-old son had his finger amputated after an alleged incident with school bullies.
Chantal Bailey says her son Rahim was left “screaming in pain” after catching his finger on the railing of the Abertillery Learning Community.
He is said to have tried to escape an attack when the injury occurred during the break, with the finger so badly damaged that doctors had no choice but to amputate it.
His mother claims that Rahim has been subjected to racial and physical violence since he started school in September 2021, but she did not know how bad the situation was until he called in tears on Monday.
After the horrific incident, he heartily asked her why it happened and why people don’t like it, according to Wales Online.

“He had mentioned several cases of people who had been ‘evil to him’ recently, I didn’t realize the extent of what he was going through until an accident this week,” she said.
“On Monday, Rahim called me in tears while I was at work, saying that he was harassed, but that he was the one who was threatened with detention, even though he was the one who was under attack.

Chantal, a mother of four, said she went to school to discuss what had happened and was “reassured that everything will be resolved”. But on Tuesday, she received another call from Rahim, who was “screaming in pain.”
She said: “On Tuesday morning, during a holiday, Rahim was attacked and beaten by a group of children while he was at school. He was pushed to the ground and then repeatedly kicked.

“He made a desperate attempt to leave the school to escape the situation, but caught his finger. I received a phone call from Rahim and then the school informing me of the incident.
“The school told me that the ambulance would not arrive in two hours, but advised me not to drive Rahim to A&E. Rahim, his brother and I were taken to the minor injuries ward by the school bus, even though they knew he was seriously injured.
“We spent the next five hours waiting for an ambulance to take us to the place where he would be operated on, in Swansea, 50 miles from home and school.

“Over time, it became more apparent that my son’s chance of losing his finger was real. Then the doctors confirmed that it was possible. I had to explain it to him while he was sitting there in agony.”
Rahim had to undergo a six-hour operation to try to save his finger, but was unsuccessful and had to be amputated.

Chantal says: “He has returned home and is in a lot of pain. I think he still suffers from shock because he keeps asking why it happened to him and why people don’t like him.
“We haven’t seen his hand yet because it’s all bandaged, but it will take a while for him to get used to it. I am extremely upset because the school has not reached me since the day of the incident to check on his well-being. “
A spokesman for the Abertillery Learning Community said: “We are currently working closely with Guent’s police and local authorities to establish the full details of the incident.

“The well-being and safety of our students and staff remain paramount. We will not comment further at this time. “
Guent police have confirmed they are investigating the incident after receiving a report on Wednesday (May 18th).
A spokesman for the force said: “We received a report of an incident at a school in Abertyleri at around 1pm on Wednesday, in which an 11-year-old boy was injured.
“Several agencies have met and we are working with the school as part of our ongoing inquiries.”
