The 16-year-old Calgarian has been charged with attempted murder

The Calgary Police Department has confirmed that a 16-year-old man has been charged following an investigation into reports that the teenager tried to hire someone to commit murder instead.

The teenager’s alleged attempt to offer payment in exchange for the murder of someone was first reported to police on May 13. Charges against the teenager were filed after a six-week investigation.

The teenager, who was arrested on Tuesday, is charged with:

  • Murder lawyer;
  • Violation of a court order; and,
  • Possession of marijuana.

Police did not reveal who tried to kill the accused, nor the sex of the accused.

Calgary police say this is a rare situation for the city.

“Definitely not something like that, involving a young man with a 33-year career,” said a staff sergeant. Colin Chisholm of the CPS Homicide Division in an interview with CTV News on Wednesday.

“The witness appeared six weeks ago and we need time to gather enough information to present as evidence so that the Crown is ready to continue with the accusation.”

Chisholm says the situation is shocking to people who hear it.

“It’s disturbing to think that a 16-year-old would want to hire someone to kill another young man.”

The young man’s identity is being hidden due to the provisions of the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act, but Chisholm says the witness and the suspect knew each other.

The accused is due to appear in court on Thursday.
