BBC presenter John Kay asked Carol Kirkwood if she had any tips on how to remove bird droppings from a linen jacket after it was “sprayed” live on air.
Kay, who was last week announced as the new regular presenter of BBC Breakfast from Monday to Wednesday, was presenting from Cambridge wearing a beige linen suit when the incident happened.
After asking weather anchor Kirkwood for her top tips for keeping cool during the heat wave, he said: “Carol, do you have any tips for getting bird droppings off linen jackets? Because I was just slapped by a pigeon…”
As he goes to wipe the collar of his jacket and asks, “Should I come in with the wet..?” Kirkwood suggested, “Try one of those wet wipe things, it might spread a little, but if you use a few…”
Hull-born Kay, 52, added: “It can get messy, can’t it? I’m a little worried about doing this. I have another jacket too – maybe we’ll go with that option for now and hit the dry cleaners a bit later.”
As he wrapped up his segment, he joked: “I’m going to dust my jacket and try to sort it out, in the meantime I’m glad it wasn’t a swan, to be honest, it was just a dove.”
From the studio, host Nina Warhurst told Kay that while she didn’t feel like it, “this delivery is considered lucky!”
After the incident, Kay changed into a dark jacket to present the rest of the program.
Meanwhile, as the heatwave grips England, Kirkwood’s advice for keeping cool was: “Keep hydrated, above all make sure you drink plenty of water, stay away from alcohol and caffeine if you can.”
Speaking just after 7am on Monday morning, Kirkwood added: “When it’s early in the morning like now, open your windows and doors, let the cooler air in, but you’ll have to close them again.
“Close your curtains to keep the hot air coming at us out, walk in the shade if you have to be out, avoid the hours of 11am to 3pm and don’t leave animals or people in parked, closed cars… I think that’s probably will be my best advice, John.”
