The best photos from San Francisco Pride 2022

After two missed years due to the pandemic, the San Francisco Pride returned this weekend with its first personal parade since 2019.

The fun began in Embarcadero, with SF Dykes on Bikes heading down Market Street. Reminiscent of the Golden State Warriors Championship parade last weekend, Market Street was flooded with San Francisco people ready to celebrate the LGBTQ + community in the city. Crowds spread around the Civic Center, where vendors and food stalls served thousands of attendees.

This year’s grand marshals included musician Melanie Demor, non-profit director Winnie Eng, public health teacher Amber Gray, trans activist Andrea Horn, OaklandTransMarch co-founder Sokoro “Corey” Morland and pioneering hip-hop DJ Melaniek. Martha Wash of Weather Girls was the headliner, and “Jeopardy!” champion Amy Schneider also appeared on the main stage.

The beginning of this year’s pride was marked by controversy and concern. In late May, the mayor of London, Breed, announced that he would withdraw from the parade due to a rule prohibiting police from attending in uniform. Pride eventually repealed the rule, allowing less than 10 people to attend in uniform. The parade also came shortly after an alleged hate crime against local drag artist Panda Dulce at a library in the Bay Area.

On Sunday, Pride attendees, dressed in all kinds of rainbow-colored clothing you can imagine, applauded the parade floats, but many homemade signs expressed concern and disobedience to Rowe’s Supreme Court overturning Wade. Elements of activism during the celebration reminded of Pride’s roots as a powerful protest movement.
