Police say three men from Vancouver Island have been arrested for allegedly driving a group of drug traffickers in the “dark network” in Nanaimo, British Columbia, after an undercover investigation began in early 2019.
An RCMP press release on Tuesday said a provider calling itself AlwaysOverweight used cryptocurrency and encrypted messaging apps to sell drugs that include methamphetamine, oxycodone, cocaine, MDMA, Xanax and fentanyl, which is advertised as heroin. .
The RCMP’s Organized Crime Unit describes the dark web as the “third hidden layer” of the Internet, under the open network and the deep network, and says it is accessed through special browsers that hide users’ digital footprint.
Police say they managed to break through the “digital barriers” of the criminal group and identified an address in Nanaimo, British Columbia, as the physical location of the seller.
They say officers seized various drugs, packaging, envelopes, documents, cash, computers and storage devices during searches.
Police say three men were arrested in February 2020 and are scheduled to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court on June 7, accused of trafficking and other crimes.
