The first case of monkeypox in Pittsburgh – WPXI – has been reported

PITTSBURG – The first case of monkeypox has been reported in Pittsburgh.

According to the report, the patient who tested positive has his primary care physician at the Central Outreach Wellness Center on the north coast of Pittsburgh.

Thus, the total number of cases in the state becomes five. The first Pennsylvania case was reported in Philadelphia on June 2.

On Tuesday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stepped up its response to the smallpox outbreak by activating its emergency operations center.

Nearly 4,000 cases have been diagnosed worldwide since the epidemic began in May, according to the World Health Organization.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smallpox begins with:

  • Fever
  • headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Back pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • chills
  • Exhaustion

Within one to three days of having a fever, the patient develops a rash, often starting in the face and then spreading to other parts of the body.

According to the CDC, monkeypox is spread in various ways, including the following:

  • direct contact with an infectious rash, scabs or body fluids
  • respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling or sex
  • touching objects (such as clothing or bedding) that have previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids
  • pregnant people can transmit the virus to their fetus through the placenta

In particular, the CDC now advises healthcare providers to test for any rash with a clinical suspicion of monkeypox.

According to the CDC, “There is currently no proven safe treatment for monkeypox virus infection. The smallpox vaccine is given to control a potential outbreak.

The Central Outreach Wellness Center said to “keep your hands to yourself” to stop the spread.
