The government has published a five-year moose management plan

The provincial government has released a new five-year moose management plan that came after extensive consultation with the public and others.

About 100,000 people participate in Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual elk hunt, and interest in the online results for elk license draws has been so great it has crashed the system, according to Wildlife Minister Derrick Bragg.

Bragg says the Prime Minister was “blown out of the water” by the 50,000 people who entered within two hours to see if they had received their licence. Bragg says the prime minister remarked that he had never seen anything like it.

The focus of the Moose Management Plan is to balance management of the resource with the ecosystem in which they live.

Wildlife director Blair Adams says the level of public engagement is high.

He says an online survey and open house have been held in addition to feedback provided by residents who simply write, email or call with their ideas for improvements to the plan.
