Grand Falls-Windor Pride members are grateful for the outpouring of generosity, kindness and support they received after an unfortunate incident that they said only heightened the need for Pride events.
The Lions Club Grand Falls-Windsor announced yesterday that it had severed its partnership with a local church after the Salvation Army Citadel on Park Street objected to the service club inviting the local Pride Committee to a weekly walk for a healthy lifestyle.
Lion’s Club has been hosting walks every Thursday night at the Park Street Salvation Army property for some time.
The walks are aimed at promoting active life, and to celebrate the month of pride, the Lion Club invited members of GF-W Pride to join the activity tonight.
This did not please the church, which led the club to cancel the walk and break off its partnership with the Salvation Army Citadel.
The Lion Club is now looking for another place.
Alice Frampton, co-chair of Pride Grand Falls-Windsor, said they were not shocked to receive the news.
She says they have seen a history of anti-2SLGBTQ + messages from the Salvation Army, so they were not surprised but were still injured. She says Lion’s Club just did a good thing by inviting them to complete Pride Month.
Meanwhile, the Salvation Army in Newfoundland and Labrador issued a statement on the situation. They say they are disappointed with the way the situation with Lion’s Club has developed, as they have not asked for the event to be canceled.
They say that as a religious organization, The Salvation Army Park Street Citadel is guided by the core values of the organization and welcomes everyone into church ownership.
