The indicator for Apple M2 appears online

We have a better idea of the likely performance improvements of the new Apple M2 chip after it showed up in a popular benchmark test.

One of the big announcements of Apple’s recent key report on WWDC 2022 was the new M2 processor and the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops that will initially run on it.

Apple said the M2 will provide an 18% boost to CPU speeds compared to the M1, a 35% faster GPU and a 40% faster Neural Engine.

As noted by Vadim Yuriev (via 9to5Mac), a benchmark of a device running the Apple M2 chip has appeared in the Geekbench database, offering a first real look at the profits made.

The new chip boasts a processor clock speed of 3.49 GHz, as opposed to 3.2 GHz on the M1. Single-core performance for M2 is 11.56% higher than M1, while multi-core performance has increased by 19.45%.

With reviews of the new MacBook Pro expected next week, these comparison tests are likely to be from journalists and others who gained early access to the hardware, so they are very likely to reflect on M2’s final offer.

We are interested to see how the all-new MacBook Air performs. Although it carries the same M2 chip as the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, its fanless design will mean a lower level of performance – at least over time.

We’re still more excited about the new MacBook Air than the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, thanks to its all-new design. While the MacBook Pro is almost unchanged from the previous model, the MacBook Air (2022) delivers a sleek new chassis, a return MagSafe charge, an improved screen and a much better 1080p webcam.

Expect our review of Apple M2 devices, comparison tests and everything else.
