A “wet wipe island” the size of two tennis courts is forming in the Thames, prompting ministers to urge people to avoid using objects.

The government is considering banning wet wipes containing plastic in an attempt to reduce the pollution caused by flushing them down the toilet.

Rebecca Poe, the environment minister, said that if citizens were to use wet wipes, they should not throw them down the drain.

Fleur Anderson, a Labor MP, warned that piles of wet wipes and rubbish were changing the shape of rivers and polluting water. Wet wipes also make up about 90% of the fatberg materials, fat deposits and household waste that
