The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET. The commission has not yet announced witnesses.
Although the committee did not announce the topic of the hearing in its notice, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the committee, previously told CBS’ “Face the Nation” last weekend that the next hearing would focus on “efforts to gather that crowd at the mall,” and the ties between the Trump White House and various extremist groups at the rally preceding the attack on the Capitol, including the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and others.
The announcement comes a week after landmark testimony before the committee by former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who recalled being told of Trump’s anger when he was told by his Secret Service that he could not go to the Capitol on Jan. 6. Hutchinson, who was an aide to then-Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, also testified that Trump and Meadows were informed that those attending the Jan. 6 rally were armed.
After Hutchinson’s testimony, Sarah Matthews, who was Trump’s deputy White House press secretary until resigning shortly after the Jan. 6 attack, tweeted that “anyone who downplays Cassidy Hutchinson’s role or her access to the West Wing , also doesn’t understand how Trump [White House] has worked or is trying to discredit her because they are afraid of how damning this testimony is.”
Matthews has been subpoenaed by the committee and has agreed to testify at an upcoming hearing, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. The former White House aide has been subpoenaed to testify at a public hearing as early as next week, sources told CNN. Over the weekend, Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican who serves on the committee, told CNN’s Dana Bash that Hutchinson’s testimony had “been inspiring to a lot of people” and that more witnesses had come forward since her revelations last week, adding: ” There will be much more information – and stay tuned,” without elaborating.
Kinzinger said in the State of the Union that he did not want to “get into those details” about potential new witnesses, but noted that “every day we get new people coming forward” before the committee.
