The latest Boris Johnson: The “neck and neck” partial election in the Tory fortress

Boris Johnson cannot deny that he offered Carrie Simonds a top position

The decisive by-elections in the Conservative stronghold of Tiverton and Honiton are “neck and neck”, according to the Liberal Democrats.

As voters prepare to go to the polls on Thursday in two by-elections, Sir Ed Davy suggested that his party “may be on the verge of a historic victory”.

The second ballot will take place in Wakefield, a red-wall location that Sir Keir Starmer hopes to take back for Labor after falling into the hands of the Tories in the 2019 elections for the first time since the constituency was created. in 1932

Conservative MPs told The Independent that the double defeat in the by-elections would be a “disaster” for the struggling Boris Johnson, who survived a vote of no confidence two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Jacob Rees-Mogg has been accused of unraveling a “trick” on Brexit – a quarterly billboard with reformed EU laws – which “will do nothing to address the real challenges facing the public today”.

Government loans reached a record high in May as inflation rose

Government loans were higher than the expected 14 billion pounds last month, as rising inflation led to a record level of debt interest rates, according to official figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said government loans were £ 4 billion less than in May last year, but were still the third largest in May since the start of monthly records in 1993. and 8.5 billion pounds more than in May 2019, before the pandemic hit.

The data reveals that rising inflation has led to a record £ 7.6 billion in interest payments on government debt – £ 3.1 billion more than a year earlier.

The ONS said the jump in UK debt interest payments was due to the recent jump in the Inflationary Retail Index (RPI) inflation measure, which measures the payments of index-linked young women.

So far this financial year, interest payments on debt amount to £ 14.1 billion, up £ 4.7 billion on an annual basis, ONS reported.

June figures are expected to show the worst of the impact of inflation on government debt payments, with the Office for Budgetary Responsibility (OBR) forecasting £ 19.7 billion, the biggest record to date.

The next Labor leader should be a woman, Harman said

Harriet Harman said it was “outright embarrassing” that the Labor Party had never led a woman and that the next leader should be a woman.

“Because even when we have leadership elections in the distant future, next time she has to be a woman, because it’s embarrassing that the Conservatives had two and we don’t even have a woman leader in opposition, let alone a woman prime minister.” she told GB News.

Ms Harman added: “I think it’s partly because women in the Labor Party are more subversive than women in the Conservative Party. Women in the Conservative Party tend to work with men without challenging them the way we do.

Votes Boris Johnson was confused as Keira Starmer won the rhetorical battle

We took our seats on the opposition leader’s questions, waiting for Boris Johnson to ask Keira Starmer to condemn the rail strikes six times.

But as everyone expected the prime minister to do so, he was deprived of the element of surprise.

Instead, it was Starmer who began by praising the “brave” Conservative candidate in the Wakefield by-elections.

The Labor leader had no decision, but he was looking responsibly at the prime minister’s questions this week, writes John Rentol.
