The Maple Leafs have agreed to a one-year contract with defenseman Victor Mete

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defensemen Jordi Benn and Victor Mete to one-year contracts on Thursday.

The average annual value of the two contracts is $750,000.

Benn, 34, of Victoria, British Columbia, recorded eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 39 games with the Minnesota Wild during the 2021-22 season.

Benn played in 595 career games split between Minnesota, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Montreal and Dallas and scored 135 points (25 goals, 110 assists) while adding four assists in 23 career playoff games.

He originally joined the Dallas Stars organization as a free agent on September 27, 2010.

Mete, 24, of Woodbridge, Ont., recorded seven assists in 37 games with the Ottawa Senators during the 2021-22 season. Haas has 43 points (five goals, 38 assists) in 236 career regular-season games with Ottawa and Montreal and has collected two assists in 10 career playoff games.

Mete was the co-captain of Team Canada that won gold at the 2018 World Junior Championships and recorded three assists in six games at the tournament.

Mete was originally drafted by Montreal in the fourth round (100th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
