The Morning After: Everything important from Google I / O 2022

Many great announcements from the annual Google Developers Conference yesterday. It was a mix of intriguing new products coming soon (and some a little later), further advances in AI, and some more improvements to the myriad services and applications that penetrate so much of our lives.

I pulled out some of the highlights below and desperately tried to put together some of the other notable titles, but, wow, Google had a lot to get rid of, hardware: Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel Buds Pro and even the Pixel section.

Google

For starters, yes, the Pixel Watch is real and arrives this fall. It has an almost frameless dial surrounded by a “tactile crown”. It runs Wear OS 3 and includes deep integration with Fitbit software for its health and fitness tracking features. As review editor Cherlin Lowe said: “It’s a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Watch without a frame.

“Matt Smith.”

It looks like a major upgrade for the mid-range line.

The Pixel 6a is powered by Google’s first Tenso AI chip, just like the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro before it. It will cost much less – only $ 449 – when it hits the shelves on July 28. It has the same unique two-tone body (and unique camera framing) as the Pixel 6, something that helps it stand out from other mid-range black plates.

Google also narrowed the screen to 6.1 inches from the 6.34-inch display to the 5a. Together with the smaller materials of the case, this means that it is approximately the size of the Pixel 5. Enjoy for small phones. The biggest sacrifice at this price may be the camera: the 6a has a 12-megapixel sensor compared to the 50-megapixel main camera of the Pixel 6.

Two models coming later this year.

Google annoys preview of Pixel 7-6a, schmix. Unfortunately, there were no specific specifications for the cameras or components, but we were able to look at the design of the Pixel 7, which retains the prominent tape of the camera that debuted the Pixel 6. For 2022, an improvement on the Pixel 7 is a new frame made of recycled aluminum.

Again, it’s all about the cameras.

Sony

Time, Sony! Its latest flagship phone features a host of innovative, image-oriented features, including what it calls “the world’s first true optical 85-125mm zoom lens”, along with true 4K at 120 frames per second, live streaming and even external monitor capabilities. The main feature may be the new telephoto magnification with 85-125 mm equivalent magnification range, enough for sports, wildlife and more. To create it, Sony seems to have used a 90-degree periscope system.

Surround audio will be available soon.

Google’s $ 199 Pixel Buds Pro comes much earlier than the rest of its new hardware. They will arrive on July 28, with pre-orders opening on July 21. Key features include support for multipoint connectivity, IPX4-certified waterproofing and active noise reduction. The most intriguing feature for me is Google’s new tool called Silent Seal. The company says that the Pixel Buds Pro will adapt to your ears to maximize the effectiveness of the ANC, and the headphones also monitor the pressure in your ear canal, relieving it if necessary for your comfort. I’ve found that Pixel Buds aren’t exactly comfortable in the past – let’s see how the Pro version works.

The company offered a brief look at a future wearable device.

A decade after Google Glass debuted at I / O 2012, Google is working on a new set of augmented reality glasses. The company is annoying the I / O 2022 device by sharing a short video that shows some of its capabilities. We saw an “early prototype” of wearable real-time transcription and, in another demonstration, live translation from Spanish to English.

The company has made a few compromises, but it still sounds great.

Sonos home theater speakers are usually first-class products, with the $ 449 Beam being the cheapest soundbar the company has ever made. Now the company presents Ray, its most compact and cheapest soundtrack, which arrives on June 7. At $ 279, it doesn’t compete on bargain options with Roku’s $ 130 Streambar. But in a preliminary demonstration, Ray seems to be a powerful soundtrack that will be a massive upgrade over almost any TV’s built-in speakers.

A judge of the Court of Appeal said that social networks are not websites, but “Internet providers”.

The Fifth U.S. District Court of Appeals has suspended the temporary injunction of the controversial HB 20 law, which another court blocked from coming into force last year. Under the law, consumers will be able to sue major social media platforms with more than 50 million active monthly users, such as Facebook and Twitter, if they believe they have been banned because of their political views. HB 20 also prohibits social networks from removing or restricting content based on a ‘user or other person’s point of view’.
