The Mount Pearl municipal workers’ strike enters its sixth day

The Mount Pearl strike enters its sixth day with no end in sight.

The labor dispute resulted in service disruptions for residents and the temporary suspension of both indoor and outdoor sports programs.

The president of CUPE Local 2099, Ken Turner, says he sympathizes with the public frustrated by the inconvenience and disruption, but says the city’s bargaining team is the one that put the union in a strike position.

Turner says the city backed away from the table, leaving the union little choice.

Mayor Dave Acker says the city is ready and willing to return to the negotiating table at any time.

He points out that he was aware of “a lot of conversation over the weekend” about the availability of urban infrastructure.
