The political earthquake in California makes the left flee

Voters in deep blue California rebuked Democrats in both the Gulf and southern parts of the country on Tuesday.

Why it matters: Even in the best centers of democratic power, average-age liberal voters are fed up. This is a grim sign for President Biden as Democrats try to detain the House of Representatives and the Senate in November.

• Jim Kessler of the Third Way, the centrist Democratic think tank, tweeted, “If the National Democrats don’t wake up to what happened to the progressives in New York, Minnesota and Yugoslavia, prepare for permanent minority status this cycle.”

What’s happening: San Francisco voters have recalled County Attorney Chesa Budin after a split election over the prosecutor’s work on crime, according to the Associated Press.

• Representative Karen Bass (D-CA) and billionaire developer Rick Caruso are heading to a runoff in November in the national race for the next mayor of Los Angeles, according to the AP.
