The Privacy Commissioner has approved the secrecy of SJSEL payment packages for the time being

(Privacy Commissioner Michael Harvey)

The provincial privacy commissioner has sided with the city of St. John’s, at least for now, on information detained in a request for access to information on St. John’s sports and entertainment.

According to the Office of the Commissioner for Privacy, a request has been submitted for information related to the positions and remuneration of former employees of St. John’s Sports and Entertainment.

The city provided the positions, but refused to provide remuneration paid, citing the settlement privilege and the relevant sections of the Access to Information and Privacy Protection Act.

The office says the circumstances surrounding the departure of these employees are related to alleged cases of harassment in the workplace, which are currently being investigated.

Commissioner Michael Harvey says the current circumstances could keep the city from withholding information. However, he noted that the situation is volatile and the city may not have the right to withhold this information indefinitely.
