One of the major changes in the transition from “The Summer I Became Beautiful” from a novel to a TV series involves the character of Jeremiah Fisher (played by Gavin Casaleño), one of the two brothers fighting for the heart of the 16-year-old. Isabel “White” Conklin (Lola Tung).

In YA’s Prime Video drama (which premiered Friday with all seven episodes), Jeremiah is sexually smooth compared to his book. In Episode 2, he lists all the girls and boys in the country club he kissed, and then later describes himself as a flirt with equal opportunities.

“My approach to this adaptation was: How will I tell the story in 2022? What would that look like? And how would that change things? “Joint showrunner Jenny Hahn, who wrote the novels, told TVLine.” I think maybe if I was writing the novel today, I might have made that choice because I think he’s always been a hero. for me, who is really calm with himself, really comfortable in his own skin, open and open to research, I think that reflects more today and young people today and the way they look at sexuality as a much wider range. “

Given that he is just a high school student, Jeremiah is still researching his sexuality and is not ready to identify as bisexual, Khan added. “I would say [he’s] sexual fluid. He is a young man who understands where he is in all this and has not yet experienced much love. It’s still a little early on this trip, “Khan explains.

And although Jeremiah is sexually mobile in this version of the story, the central love triangle of the books of White, Jeremiah, and Fisher’s other brother, Conrad (Christopher Bryney), remains “intact” on the show, Hahn said. “I still feel like all the characters are the same,” she said.
