A ferry chain reportedly snapped at the Torpoint ferry last night (Friday, June 24), leaving the river crossing service with only two ferries. The “technical problem” is expected to disrupt until Monday morning, when it is planned to resume the trip by three ferries.
The ferry seemed to deviate from the course and apparently had to be moved by tug. The disturbance came at about the same time as the planned “fuel riot” protest on the Tamar Bridge, which sparked expectations of long delays in Plymouth.
Users of the ferry service are warned to “plan their journeys accordingly” after the interruption.

The joint committee of Tamar Crossings – Tamar Bridge and Torpoint posted a statement on Facebook last night, which reads: “Ferry: Due to a technical problem, we will perform 2 ferry services to another order. We expect 3 ferries by Monday morning. Please plan your trips accordingly. ”
Facebook’s Torpoint & Rame Community Events & Services group also updated its followers with a post saying, “A ferry chain has broken, on the Tamar ferry, pull it by moving it aside.”
Following the low turnout at the Tamar Bridge protest, one commentator said: “More effective in disrupting the protest against the bridge.” The protest at the Tamar Bridge began at 5 pm when protesters appeared and blocked the lanes of the bridge.
The Torpoint Ferry and the Tamar Bridge were also the subject of other talks this week, as planned toll increases could take effect earlier than expected. A 30 percent increase in tolls is expected to be introduced in January, but drivers could already see it earlier.
Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council agreed earlier this year to raise tolls to help cover the budget gap created by the drop in traffic using intersections since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The planned increase will mean that cash fees will increase from £ 2 to £ 2.60, and TamarTag users will see an increase in costs from £ 1 to £ 1.30.
