Wednesday, June 15, 2022, 11:18 a.m. – Stormy skies over southern Ontario filled with asperiti clouds on Wednesday morning.
Social media erupted with images of some dramatic, wave-like clouds that unfolded over parts of the Greater Toronto (GTA) area early Wednesday morning.
These clouds are known as asperitas clouds – officially called undulatus asperatus clouds.
“These relatively rare cloud formations take on the appearance of waves in the atmosphere, giving the clouds an ultra-3D appearance,” said Kelly Sonnenburg, a meteorologist with The Weather Network. “These clouds are formed due to warmer, richer air masses, overcoming a relatively stable and cooler layer of air on the surface.”
