6:34 PM CDT – Severe thunderstorms have prompted a tornado warning for Saskatchewan Sunday afternoon.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a tornado warning for the following areas in Saskatchewan:
- RM of Maple Bush including Riverhurst and Douglas Prov. Park.
- RM of Huron including Tugaske
“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches,” the ECCC said in its warning.
The agency added: “Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from exterior walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Abandon mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers, and other temporary or free-standing shelter and move to a sturdy building if you can. As a last resort, lie low and protect your head from flying debris.

- RM of Loreburn including Elbow Loreburn and Hawarden

Sunday through Monday morning: Warmth continues across the prairies along with the risk of a storm
Heat advisories remain in place across much of the Prairies on Sunday as high temperatures and high humidity send feel-like values jumping into the upper 30s to near 40s.
Continued heat and humidity will produce numerous thunderstorms over the next few days, with the next opportunity coming during the day on Sunday.
The risk of severe thunderstorms on Sunday will extend from central Saskatchewan through northwestern Ontario, covering Saskatoon, eastern Regina, Prince Albert, as well as Winnipeg and Brandon.
Much of Sunday’s severe weather threat will develop after sunset, starting late Sunday night and continuing into early Monday morning. People in the Winnipeg area may wake up to severe thunderstorms early Monday morning.

The risk of overnight thunderstorms will be greatest in the Interlake area of Manitoba, with a few chances for thunderstorms across the region overnight. Make sure you have a way to receive severe weather alerts even if you’re sleeping.
Any severe thunderstorms that develop Sunday evening could bring strong wind gusts and large hail.
Temperatures will begin to cool for southwestern Saskatchewan Sunday night as temperatures drop into the low teens.
Monday afternoon/evening: Still hot, more thunderstorms expected
Monday will see two separate areas of thunderstorms across the prairies. The first round will be these early morning storms in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. These storms will continue to the east as we move through the morning hours.
Later in the day, another disturbance moving across the southern prairies will bring a renewed risk of severe thunderstorms to south and west-central Alberta as well as southern Saskatchewan. Any thunderstorms that form around Lethbridge and Medicine Hat and areas along and east of the northern foothills may produce strong wind gusts and large hail.
Temperatures will register significantly cooler across the region on Monday as the heat finally subsides.
Daytime highs in Calgary could reach the low 20s, while people in Saskatchewan can expect temperatures in the mid to high 20s. However, the heat and humidity will linger in southern Manitoba for another day, with humidity pushing the feel high into the upper 30s.
After Monday, things look better on the prairies as we head into the week.
Calmer conditions and more seasonable temperatures will blanket the region during the penultimate weekend of July, with plenty of sunshine and daytime highs around the season from Calgary to Winnipeg.
