A hot weekend is on the horizon for much of the Prairies as heat and humidity linger over the next few days. Widespread heat warnings are in effect from southern Alberta to northern Ontario, including nearly all major cities in the region. The risk of isolated strong storms will also increase amid the heat and humidity. More on what to expect over the weekend below.

Saturday and Sunday: Warmth continues across the prairies, isolated storm risk
Isolated thunderstorms developed across parts of the prairies during the day on Friday. We can expect these storms to continue overnight Friday into early Saturday across parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Heat warnings will continue across much of the Prairies as we head into the weekend. Almost all major cities – including Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg – are on alerts to warn residents of excessive heat and humidity.
Daytime highs on Saturday will climb into the 30s across the region, with feel-good values nearing 40 in some areas, especially in Saskatchewan.
Residents and visitors to the alerted regions are advised to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbors:
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities for the cooler hours of the day.
- Take frequent breaks from the heat by spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
- Drink plenty of water and other soft and non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
- Check for your children or pets before exiting the vehicle. Do not leave people or pets in a closed vehicle for a long time.

Hot, muggy air will fuel another chance for thunderstorms during the day on Saturday.
The risk of thunderstorms will increase in several areas, including the Alberta foothills and a stretch of the prairies from northern Alberta through the Interlake region. People around Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Prince Albert could handle some thunderstorms to start the weekend.
Some of the thunderstorms in central Saskatchewan and Manitoba may reach severe limits. While the storm risk is isolated, any stronger storms that form in these areas could bring strong wind gusts and large hail.
