The Yankees destroy the Cubes with 18 runs to complete the cleanup

The Yankees hung out for five, then enjoyed a day at the beach.

After setting the tone in the first inning of five series, the Yankees continued to accumulate early and often to finish three Cubs games with an 18-4 laugh with a victory on Sunday afternoon in the Bronx.

With eight of their nine starters scoring at least one goal – and six enjoying days with multiple strikes – the Yankees (44-16) have won for the 11th time in their last 12 games. Their offense has been feeding them lately, scoring eight or more runs in four of their last six games – including 18 sessions on Sunday with 17 goals of the season.

Matt Carpenter, a late addition to the Gleyber Torres, led the offensive attack, making a 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, doubles and seven RBIs. In the 10 games since signing with the Yankees in late May after seeking his release from the Rangers branch of Triple-A, the veteran Carpenter has eight goals – six of which are home runs.

As a good measure, with a 13-run lead in the eighth inning, Carpenter stopped diving at third base to drop a runner at the start, ending a good day for the former cardinal.

Kyle Higashioka, another late-back deputy for Jose Trevino (behind), also joined in, making his first two home runs of the year.

The Cubs’ biggest feat of the weekend turned out to be holding the Yankees up to twice to 13 innings on Friday night. The floodgates opened from there as the Yankees amassed 26 runs in the last two games to complete the victory.

Jameson Taillon wasn’t too sharp, but he had a huge lead on the field with most of his five innings at work. Cubs (23-36) broke away for three runs with seven hits, but Taillon did his most important job: he returned his attack to the dugout relatively quickly so they could continue to do more damage.

The Yankees actually fell short on Sunday – the only time in the series – as a potential summer trading target Ian Happ took Taillon deep for a solo home run at the start of the first inning.

However, the Cubs’ lead did not last long.

Aaron Judge took the lead from the bottom of the first with a single, before Cubs’ right hand Keegan Thompson walked three consecutive batteries with one out to level the game. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa then led the Yankees forward forever with a double double.

After the relegation of Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisham allowed the rally to continue, Joey Gallo doubled with two outs and two runs for a 5-1 lead that knocked Thompson out of the game.

Carpenter made his first home run of the day in the second inning, a three-run shot in the right field that made it 8-1.

After Higashioka took the lead in the third inning with a homer, Gallo left and scored a goal in Giancarlo Stanton’s double with RBI for a 10-1 lead.

Carpenter went deep again in the sixth inning, hitting two runs in the right field. He became only the second player since 1900 to have six of his first seven goals of the season as a home run.

The Yankees won five more places in the seventh inning against reveler Sean Newcomb before the Cubs got first baseman Frank Schwindel to direct eighth. Higashioka greeted him with a homer that overcame the resulting attack.
