There’s a new reason to buy the Oculus Quest 2 on Prime Day this year

If you’ve been wanting to finally get into VR this year, Amazon Prime Day is the best time ever to make the leap into the metaverse. Surprisingly, though, it’s not because of a great deal — they’re sure to come, so keep an eye out for the best Quest 2 Prime Day deals (opens in a new tab).

Rather, it’s because Meta has finally announced that it will no longer require a Facebook account to use Oculus Quest 2 (opens in a new tab) (now known as Meta Quest 2).

This is true! Starting this August, you will no longer need a Facebook account to use Quest 2. Ever since Quest 2 launched, Meta has required the use of an active Facebook account to play games, apps, or even just use the headset at all.

While this made it easy to log in and set up if you were already a Facebook user, having a Facebook account linked to a VR headset proved to be a huge problem for many people. In many cases, people have been banned from Facebook (opens in new tab) – whether it was for a legitimate reason or not – rendering Quest 2 useless.

When Meta flips the switch this August and changes the rules, you’ll need to sign up for a new Meta account. Instead of your personal Facebook account, you’ll be using a separate meta account that’s only meant for one thing at the moment: to let you pay for things in the metaverse.

Whether that means buying the best Quest 2 games (opens in a new tab) or buying clothes for your avatar in Horizon Worlds is entirely up to you. You’ll just use your Meta account to do it.

Since this account is completely separate from your social media feed — and you can actually choose to never even link your Facebook or Instagram accounts to it — it will be free of the problems that occurred when their Facebook accounts were banned.

When you create a Meta account, you will also create a Meta Horizon profile that will include your name, username, and an avatar that will represent you in the Meta virtual spaces. Whether you look like this at a virtual concert (opens in new tab) or while playing games with friends in the worlds of Horizon, your avatar is designed to be the character you want to be.

Why Prime Day?

Prime Day is one of the best days of the year to get deals on almost anything you would normally order on Amazon. Even if the Quest 2 itself doesn’t go on sale, you’re almost guaranteed to get some of the best Quest 2 accessories (opens in new tab) on a deal.

Because the Quest 2 is so affordable, picking up these accessories is important to get the full headset experience. The default strap, for example, is good enough on its own, but it won’t feel comfortable during long gaming sessions. You’ll want to get a better Quest 2 headband (opens in new tab) for this.

Likewise, the controllers are good enough on their own, but feel even better with a great Quest 2 arm strap alternative (opens in new tab). Our favorites add a hand strap that will allow you to completely drop the controller without it falling out of your hand. This is important to make throwing in VR feel more natural, and to keep this controller from flying into a wall or TV if you forget to tighten the wrist straps tight enough.

Meta mission 2

There’s nothing quite like Meta Quest 2. This standalone VR headset works like a console, so you don’t need a computer or smartphone to power the experience. Play it and enjoy great VR games and experiences every time.
