This Is Us Summary: Season 6, Episode 14 – The Night Before The Wedding

Tuesday’s “It’s Us” may focus on Kate and Philip’s wedding, but it’s essentially Kevin’s bar mitzvah: the day he finally becomes a man.

And all his delayed growth has been rewarded, because by the end of the class, Kev and his ex-wife Sophie have reunited! Along the way, we learn how all this evidence of female presence appeared in Kevin’s hotel room to find Madison and Beth.

PLAYING DELIVERY | As the title of the episode suggests, we spend most of that the day before Philip and Kate get married. And Ariel – Philip’s girlfriend, who is the wedding singer – and Cassidy are there. But Randall sees his brother scanning the hotel lobby and realizes that Kev is following Sophie, whom he has only seen twice in the last few years: at her mother’s funeral and at Kate and Philip’s engagement.

When Sophie arrives, Kevin is visibly surprised. Rebecca is one of the first Pearson to meet her, and she greets the younger woman warmly … and then it becomes clear that Rebecca’s dementia makes her think that Soph is in her 20s and she and Kevin are still married. Meanwhile, Ariel runs to Kevin and hugs him, but that’s just to stop Philip’s lewd cousin, Oliver, from hitting her. (Side note: Cousin Oliver must be nodding to Brady Bunch, right?)

Ariel quickly thanks Kevin for saving her, making it clear that she knows he’s famous, but then admits that she’s never seen an episode of any iteration of The Manny. “I’m more of a podcast person,” she says. Shortly after they split up, Kevin saw Sophie at the front desk, who was dealing with the fact that the airline had lost her luggage and she had nothing to wear for the weekend celebrations. By the way: She flew alone because her husband returned to New York and had to work. Kevin volunteered to take her to town before the shops closed, and after a short “Is this a good idea?”, She gratefully agreed.

But they are late and by the time they arrive in the shopping district, only the dry cleaning is still open. Using a trick her mother taught her from her financially weak years after her father’s death, Sof asks the owner if she can inspect clothes that have been cleaned but never taken. There are so many long looks between Sophie and Kevin in this scene that I’m amazed that she finds time to try on a green dress she chooses from the trunk, but she does it and it’s great.

SOFI, NEOMENNA Based on their conversation, we learn that Kevin’s non-profit organization, which builds houses for veterans, is doing great. (Earlier, Ariel mentioned the “finale of the series” on his show, which leads me to suspect that the restart of The Manny is over.) Sophie then tells him that she currently lives outside Berlin, working as a traveling nurse in an attempt to see more of the world. Kevin wonders how this is going with Grant in New York, but it’s not super forthcoming. And when they started talking about the gray stain on Kevin’s beard and she approached before forbidding him to paint it, something still sparkled between the former Mr. and Mrs. Pearson. He mentions a time when Nikki cut her chin and he wanted to call her for advice, but he didn’t because he didn’t think it was appropriate. “You could have called,” she says, putting a lot of meaning into those three quiet words.

On the way back to the hotel, they stop to see the view and then take a walk in the off-season vineyard. He notices that she looks happy. “I’m really happy, Kevin,” she replies. “I’m divorced, too.”

FULL ORGANIC EXPERIENCE We return to the engagement party, where Kevin got nervous to talk to Sophie, but then awkwardly spilled wine on her just before meeting Grant, her husband. Back in the box, “I actually liked the man,” Kev says. But she tells him that the marriage is over for a while and they just tried. The reason she didn’t open sooner, she explains, was that she had to come to terms with the idea before sharing it with others.

They chat a little more. She tells him about her encounter with Rebecca. They understand that neither of them is dating, and on Kevin’s part, it’s because he feels that almost every romantic relationship he’s ever had is just a “series of failures.” And when she gets cold, he takes off his jacket and puts it on her shoulders.

So it’s no surprise that Kevin followed her in the elevator later that night, and she followed him to his room. They kiss and things warm up very quickly. They start undressing each other and she is on top of him on the bed with her bra down when he notes that her hair smells the same as before. She stops and tells him it’s not. But he claims it’s still herbal essences (tell me you were a girl from the ’90s, without telling me you’re a girl from the’ 90s, am I right?), And she gets up angrily, quickly he slides back onto his blouse and says no. Then she makes her leave.

Kevin was dumbfounded by this abrupt change in the evening. “You have to like the way my hair smells now, not the way it smells in the past,” she says. She talks in more detail about her breakup with Grant and how one day, when he got lost to Kevin, as they always did, she didn’t find it funny. She says he holds her tight and she’s carried him with her all these years, but she doesn’t want to go back. So she leaves. Kevin, dizzy with lust, says what?

“I ALWAYS CARRIED YOU WITH ME” So Kevin goes down to the bar and sees Ariel there. She watches people and writes lyrics to potential songs on cocktail napkins; when he presses her, she reads the one she wrote after watching him. And THIS is the female handwriting that Madison and Beth found in Kevin’s room later when he took it out of his pocket and placed it on his desk.

Cassidy later swings to Kevin’s room to help unbutton her dress. After he complies, he starts telling her that he thinks they can work as a couple when she very gently excludes him. “You are not my man, nor am I yours, and you know that,” she said. (By the way, she brought her PJ to his room to change, so her bra and packing were on the back of the chair the next day.) However, she says she and he are best friends, and he agrees. . . They hug at the door and she leaves.

MIRACLE OF MIRACLE, MIRACLE OF MIRACLE Kate and Philip’s wedding unfolds the next day, as we saw. During the reception, Sophie tries to tell Rebecca how beautiful her song is, and Rebecca notes that her ex-daughter-in-law looks sad. “It’s Kevin, isn’t it?” says the older woman. “I love my son, but he’s an idiot.” It quickly became clear that Rebecca thought Sophie was 20, and she gave her advice: “The time is right now. He is not ready for you. It will be, but it will take some time. And I don’t know if you can wait for that. Personally, I don’t know if I could. But when the weather is right, it will be so great. ” Sophie, who definitely takes the words to heart, just smiles.

On the other side of the room, Randall had just asked Kev about the night before and learned everything that was going on. “So let me explain this correctly: the woman you’ve been longing for for years is suddenly single and you’re depressed about it?” He teases. Kevin says he doesn’t want to hurt Sof again, then asks for advice. Randall responds with a speech on Super Bowl goods (seriously, this is not his best), but this is the conclusion: “The world is damn crazy. There’s no point. But you and Sophie together, now it makes more sense than most things.

So Kevin finds Sophie and starts talking, but she interrupts: “This time you have no right to speak. It’s her turn. “She tells him that she spent years praying for him to grow up. She makes it clear that she is the best version of herself at the moment and adds that he is now the man he has always she hoped it would happen, and her madness the night before stemmed from the idea that he was stuck in their past.

“I don’t want to go back to the old versions of ourselves,” she says with tears in her eyes. (Kev is also foggy.) “I need you to love me for the woman I am now, not for the woman I was, because you are not the man you were. And I want to fall in love with the man you’ve become. “Then Kevin took out his wallet and showed her Valentina, who had written to her the first day he saw her when she was a new student at their elementary school.” I’m always you he carried it with him, Sof, “he says.

They kiss. The room erupted in applause. Isn’t it great love, revived love?
