Thor: Love and Thunder viewers are calling on Marvel to add a trigger warning to the cancer storyline

Moviegoers are issuing trigger warnings to those planning to see Thor: Love and Thunder and criticizing Marvel’s decision not to include one at the start of the film.

The new film, which is a sequel to the 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok, stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman.

Portman returns to the franchise for the first time since 2014’s Thor: The Dark World, with director Taika Waititi giving her character Dr. Jane Foster a bigger role.

In the film, Jane is revealed to have stage four cancer and is shown undergoing chemotherapy in one scene.

Those who have seen the film since its premiere on Thursday (July 7) have been warning their Twitter followers that scenes showing Jane’s treatment may trigger those who have either gone through it themselves or have known has anyone been through this.

“If you’re planning to watch Thor: Love and Thunder and are sensitive to cancer/cancer treatment, this is an extremely prevalent theme and plot driver in the film,” one viewer warned, adding: “Prepare and take care if it is necessary.

Another viewer said: “No spoilers but Thor: Love and Thunder SHOULD have had a trigger warning for graphic cancer and the fact that we didn’t know we were going in is cruel.”

“If you have medical or cancer triggers, I’d do a little Googling of the plot before I decide to see it or not,” added another, with one person saying: “In the comics, I knew Jane had cancer. It’s been mentioned many times since this movie was announced, but the cancer scenes still hit hard. Prepare yourself if you have lost someone to cancer.

However, some praised the film for its portrayal of a person with cancer, with one person writing, “Jane Foster’s storyline had crazy emotional resonance for me. Both my mother and a close friend battled cancer a few years ago. Thor’s desire to protect Jane and Jane’s struggle to keep fighting really hits home. I think we all needed to hear a story like that.”

Another movie released this week that people are warning would-be viewers about is the new Netflix documentary Girl in the Picture, which many are calling “terrifying” and “the scariest thing ever made.”

MCU fans have complained that the new film has opened up a significant plot hole for the long-running film series. However, they have remained extremely excited about the introduction of a very unexpected actor to the franchise in the film’s post-credits scene.
