Police in Calgary reacted to the northwestern community on Capitol Hill in block 1500 on 21st Avenue NW around 2 p.m., and found an elderly woman with serious injuries from a dog attack. Investigators believe the woman was in the back alley working in the yard when a neighbor’s dogs ran away from their yard and attacked her.

Police believe the dogs are owned by a neighbor, not the victim or the victim’s family.

EMS said the woman was transported to Foothills Medical Center in a life-threatening condition. Calgary police said Sunday night that the woman later died at a hospital.

A joint investigation unit is investigating the attack as chief investigators and the CPS homicide unit are consulting with them, Calgary police said. Employees also work with bylaws as animals are involved.

The investigation continues.

Police said the next steps in an incident like this depend on what was revealed in the investigation, but could lead to charges such as negligence, causing death or a crime under a bylaw. Dogs can also be confiscated or euthanized.
