A three-year-old boy has died following a collision with a tractor on a farm in Bury.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called just before 12.45pm on Saturday after people in a vehicle carrying a seriously injured child cut off an ambulance.
Police were called to the scene, but the boy died before being taken to hospital.
He suffered serious injuries after a collision with a tractor in farmland off Bentley Hall Road in the Tottington area of Bury, police said. The driver of the tractor, who is believed to know the child, has been assisting police with their enquiries.
GMP and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the incident. A police cordon was in place for several hours but was lifted later on Saturday. Specialist staff assisted the boy’s family.
Ch Insp Ian Partington, of GMP’s Bury District, said earlier: “This is a heartbreaking incident where a young boy has tragically lost his life and my thoughts go out to his family and loved ones who will be completely devastated by today’s events.
“Despite his family stopping an ambulance while driving him to hospital as quickly as possible, the boy unfortunately could not be saved after the best efforts of the paramedics; I can’t imagine how distressing this must have been for the participants.
“We are working to ensure a full investigation is carried out and the farmland where we understand this incident took place remains cordoned off to allow our investigators and HSE partners to carry out thorough investigations to establish exactly what happened happened here.”
