Toronto police say 13-year-old boy left “threatening” messages at Scarborough school

Toronto police say a 13-year-old boy faces two charges after calling a school in Scarborough and leaving two “threatening voicemail messages” last week.

On Monday, shortly after 9:30 a.m., police said officers visited a school located on the Kingston and Galloway roads.

Investigators said the man had called the school the previous Friday – which police did not identify – at 6:31 and 6:33 p.m. and had left threatening voice messages.

The investigation of the incident identified him as a suspect boy with no known ties to the school.

A 13-year-old boy from the Peel area, whose name could not be named under the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act, turned himself in to police in 43 wards and was arrested.

Police said the boy’s parents were present during his detention.

He is accused of making threats and mischief and will appear in the courtroom in Toronto on July 20.

The news comes a day after Sir Wilfried Lorie Collegiate, located on Guildwood Parkway and Livingston Road in Scarborough, was briefly put in place after Toronto’s school board said the school had received a threat.

It is unclear whether the threat received from Sir Wilfried Laurier’s college was linked to the arrest announced by Toronto police today.

“This type of report is understandably worrying in the community and is taken very seriously,” Toronto police said in a press release. “The Toronto Police Department will thoroughly investigate all reports of this nature and bring the perpetrators to justice.

A number of GTA schools have seen an increase in threats against them in recent weeks, including in Hamilton, Brampton and Oakville.
