TORONTO – There are currently five known cases of monkeypox in Toronto, and the city’s public health department has confirmed three new cases of the virus.

Toronto Public Health updated the tracker on its website Thursday, showing five confirmed cases and five others under investigation.

The first case of the virus in Toronto was confirmed on May 26.

Ten cases that have been investigated are considered negative.

Toronto Public Health says anyone who has been in close personal contact with someone who has monkeypox can catch the virus.

Close human-to-human contact includes respiratory droplets, direct contact with skin lesions or body fluids, or indirect contact through contaminated clothing or bedding.

Health officials say monkeypox is not easily spread among humans and is not transmitted as much as COVID-19.

Monkeypox is a rare disease that comes from the same family of viruses that causes smallpox, which the World Health Organization declared eradicated worldwide in 1980.
