Tory leadership race: Conservatives split over taxes | News

Tory grandees have warned that the Conservative Party is tearing itself apart and called for an end to the toxic briefing against Rishi Sunak, the front-runner for the leadership.

Two former party leaders and a former chancellor called for a ceasefire after Boris Johnson’s allies in Number 10 accused Sunak of “treason” for triggering the prime minister’s departure.

The tax, which Sunak and Johnson have long argued over, is becoming the most divisive issue in the race. Sunak has refused to reverse the planned corporate tax increase, which is due to take effect next April.

Sunak’s leadership rivals turned on him yesterday after he urged the party not to believe their “fabulous” promises of higher spending and lower taxes.
