Tour de France stage 11 live – Pogacar faces biggest challenge yet in High Alps

Refresh

2022-07-13T11:23:09.518Z

Marc Hirschi and Mikkel Bjerg ride at the front of the peloton.

Pogacar only has five teammates left in the race, so he must use them very carefully.

2022-07-13T11:19:47.460Z

At the back, the peloton calmed down, with riders grappling with water bottles and ice packs and taking natural breaks.

The UAE Emirates team took the position to lead the peloton.

Warren Bargill (Arkéa Samsic) is the highest placed rider in the GC. He is 26th at 13:33.

In theory he could become the race leader if he can produce a huge rider and the peloton lets them go.

2022-07-13T11:15:07.005Z

115 km to go

The break has a lead of 1:00.

2022-07-13T11:13:42.919Z

The GC teams seem to have been told there are no dangerous riders in the attack and ease the chase.

Attack now has 50 seconds. The elastic has broken.

2022-07-13T11:11:47.413Z

There are now 20 riders in the attack and the gap is opening up again.

Now it’s up to 30 seconds.

2022-07-13T11:10:21.573Z

Jumbo try to attack with Benoot and another rider.

They already have Laporte and van Aert on the way.

2022-07-13T11:09:08.460Z

We have a group of 20 chasers and others right behind them.

So far, the UAE has little control over the attacks.

2022-07-13T11:06:59.450Z

120 km to go

Cattaneo joins the attack to make it three in front.

Will the peloton let them go? Their difference has decreased to 15 seconds.

2022-07-13T11:02:32.473Z

QuickStep’s Mattia Cattaneo is trying to close the gap with van Aert and van Poel.

The peloton is 35 seconds behind. The speed is high due to the strong headwind on the valley road.

2022-07-13T10:59:18.865Z

The race will perhaps come together after the sprint. Perhaps we can expect a new breakout to form very soon.

2022-07-13T10:58:00.744Z

Tom Pidcock is in his Ineos team car with an apparent radio problem.

That should be decided later in the day.

130 km to go

The valley roads continue for another 30km and the climb begins with the spectacular Lacets de Montvernier climb.

2022-07-13T10:53:02.325Z

As the racers would say, it’s a “super fast” start to the stage.

2022-07-13T10:52:35.972Z

The six chasers are at 30 seconds and the peloton at 40 seconds.

2022-07-13T10:52:14.259Z

No sprint up front with van Aert leading van der Poel over the line.

2022-07-13T10:51:43.547Z

There is a group of six chasers who work together to catch van Aert and van der Poel.

2022-07-13T10:48:39.308Z

Several teams are trying to inspire a chase, but the gap is growing.

It will be fascinating to see if van Aert and van der Poel continue to compete after the intermediate sprint.

2022-07-13T10:43:55.605Z

140 km to go

The peloton settled down, allowing van Aert and van der Poel to open a gap.

That’s up to 30 seconds.

2022-07-13T10:42:26.542Z

The difference is up to 25 seconds.

The two leave as the sprint approaches.

2022-07-13T10:40:14.817Z

WVA+MvdP lead the peloton by 15 seconds.

Zad Vlasov is chasing a mechanical problem. This is not the time to back down.

2022-07-13T10:37:41.083Z

Van Aert and van der Poel, but other riders are chasing hard.

2022-07-13T10:35:40.195Z

And the first rider to attack?

Van Aert and his cyclocross rival Matthew van der Poel.

Compete!

2022-07-13T10:34:59.124Z

Come on!

Race director Christian Prudhomme waves the flag and the stage begins.

2022-07-13T10:34:21.757Z

The first 45 kilometers are on flat valley roads.

Interestingly, the intermediate sprint comes early, in Aiguebelle, after just 16.5km

Wout van Aert is at the front of the peloton ready to chase the points.

2022-07-13T10:30:18.807Z

To prepare for the stage, read Alasdair Fotheringham’s detailed review, which details all the day’s climbs and comments from Eduardo Chozas, the Spanish stage winner that day in 1986, the only time the Tour has finished on top.

Tour de France 2022 Stage 11 preview – Tackling the rare Col du Granon summit finish

(Image credit: Getty Images Sport) 2022-07-13T10:24:21.082Z

After all, it’s definitely the toughest mountain stage of the 2022 Tour so far and just as unquestionably – along with the Alpe d’Huez the following day and the Hautacam in week three – one of the three toughest of the entire race. If Pogacar goes yellow and without him or his team showing any weakness, the chances of him keeping it until Paris in 10 days will be significantly higher.

2022-07-13T10:24:01.686Z

No matter what happens at the Col du Granon in the Tour de France, with race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) or his closest pursuers Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), the Col du Granon now has her permanent place in the history of the race.

The Col du Granon was where, way back in 1986, five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault wore the yellow jersey on the final day of his career. As such, the Col du Granon marked the end of a huge chapter in the sport.

Thaddeus Pogachar and his UAE Emirates side were the latest to sign up.

We can confirm that all other competitors signed up, including Rafa Maika, who tested positive for COVID-19 but was allowed to compete as doctors ruled he was not infected.
