Train derailment in Germany: Three killed, 16 seriously injured after accident in Bavaria

Sixty people are currently receiving medical treatment, said Stefan Scharf.

The regional train was traveling in the direction of Munich when it derailed near Burgrain, north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a ski resort in the Bavarian Alps.

The incident happened on the last school day before Pentecost, a religious holiday celebrated in Bavaria. It was not immediately clear how many students were on board when the train derailed.

Photos and videos from the scene, shared on social media, show wagons of a double-decker regional train rolling on the embankment and getting caught in deciduous trees as rescue workers carried people on stretchers.

A major emergency operation is still underway, Scharf said. Police in Upper Bavaria have taken up the rescue effort.

This is a shattering story.
