Trump pressured Vos to cancel the election after the Wisconsin decision

Former President Donald Trump called on Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos on Saturday to overturn the results of the state’s 2020 presidential election after the Supreme Court issued a ruling restricting the use of ballot boxes on Friday.

The Republican-led Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled that absentee ballot boxes can only be placed in polling stations and that only the voter can return the ballot in person, according to the Associated Press. In 2020, ballot boxes were used for voting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the court found that the Wisconsin Election Commission overstepped its bounds by allowing the use of ballot boxes.

The ruling hands a victory to Republicans, who argued without substantial evidence that the boxes led to widespread voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, which some say was stolen by Trump.

The former president, who continued to push for baseless stolen election claims, pressed Voss to use the state Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn the results — a year and a half after the election was certified in the key battleground state where Joe Biden swept to victory less than one percentage point, or 20,000 votes.

“Now it’s up to Robin Voss to do what everyone knows needs to be done.” We need FAIR and FAIR elections in our country,” the former president wrote. “Speaker Robin Voss has a decision to make!” Does Wisconsin GIVE THE ELECTION BACK, turn the election over to the actual winner (by a lot!) or sit back and do nothing while our country continues to go to HELL?”

Vos praised the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, but did not mention the possibility of canceling the 2020 election.

“Today’s decision shows that the rule of law prevails and illegal drop boxes will finally stop. This is a huge step forward in our efforts to ensure the integrity of elections. Our next step must be to elect a new governor who will sign additional election reforms,” he wrote. “The Legislature has long argued that the law never allowed these illegal drop boxes, and we are happy to be vindicated by today’s decision.”

The decision will bolster Republican efforts to tighten election laws in Wisconsin, as conservative lawmakers have tried to do in the United States since Trump’s defeat. The restrictions could impact the state’s midterm elections in November.

Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, condemned the Supreme Court decision in his own statement Friday.

“Today’s decision is another in a long line of successes by Wisconsin Republicans to make it harder for Wisconsinites to exercise their right to vote, to undermine our free, fair and secure elections, and to threaten our democracy,” he wrote.

Although more than a year has passed since the 2020 election, Trump and his allies continue to push to overturn the results and see the former president reinstated.

Attorney Christina Bobb, who supported Trump’s legal challenge to overturn the election results, told the Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN) earlier this week that if Republicans regained their majority in Congress, they could reinstate Trump as president if three states won by Biden withdraw their voters.

Other Trump allies, including Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow, which has supported election conspiracies, also said the decision should lead to decertification, speaking to RSBN on Saturday.

“Pennsylvania, Arizona and Wisconsin should be decertified immediately. There shouldn’t even be a doubt,” he said, even though there is no substantial evidence of voter fraud in any of those states.

Newsweek has reached out to Voss’ office for further comment.
