President Trump on Thursday warned Republicans in Pennsylvania not to nominate candidate Katie Barnett for an open seat in the Senate, despite her obvious followers among his supporter base.
Newscast: “Cathy Barnett will never be able to win the general election against the radical left-wing Democrats,” Trump said in a statement Thursday.
- “She has many things in her past that have not been properly explained or verified, but if she manages to do so, she will have a wonderful future in the Republican Party – and I will be behind her all the way.
Trump has again pledged support for the famous television doctor Mehmet Oz, saying he was “the only one who can easily defeat the Crazy, Moon Democrat in Pennsylvania.”
The big picture: Influential Republicans in Washington have panicked at the idea that Barnett could win the race for which Oz and Army veteran David McCormick were considered favorites.
- Barnett, who rose in opinion polls ahead of Tuesday’s primary, is the dream of an opposition researcher, write Jonathan Swan of Axios, Lachlan Markay and Andrew Solender.
- A search on her Twitter account, @ Kathy4Truth, found tweets like this: “I just ran into a Muslim today.”
Yes, but: Trump’s ally Steve Bannon told Axios that Barnett “resonated” with voters at the party’s base by not admitting his own loss in the 2020 House race.
- “Pennsylvania is MAGA against ULTRA MAGA,” Bannon said.
