Two Victoria residents face criminal charges and remain in custody after the northern lane of the Langford Trans-Canadian Highway was blocked at rush hour on Wednesday.
“These types of illegal demonstrations will not be tolerated and those who commit these crimes will be arrested immediately and brought to justice,” said an RCMP sergeant. Chris Boucher, an acting officer in charge of the West Shore RCMP, said Friday.
Although we managed to direct traffic around the protesters, these people caused a significant backlog in traffic, which undoubtedly created a lot of frustration among drivers who had to attend medical examinations, childcare services, etc.
RCMPs were called at the intersection of Highway and West Shore Parkway, where four or five people were sitting on the road, blocking vehicles.
When the police arrived, all but two left the road. A man and a woman have attached themselves to concrete filled with a barrel, a statement from the West Shore RCMP said. “These people secured themselves with the barrel as a tactic to hinder and slow down the removal process.”
Specialized officers appeared to safely pull the two out of the barrel and eventually open the way.
The highway was affected for about four hours.
