Two Uxbridge residents have been charged with more than 100 counts of fraud for an alleged multi-million dollar real estate fraud scheme in the Toronto area.
Peel police allege that over two and a half years between January 2019 and July 2021 there was a widespread fraud scheme. In each of the many incidents, the victims approached the couple expressing interest in purchasing property.
The victims then handed over advance payments “only to find out at a later date that the financial commitment had not in fact been honored,” police said, as the transactions turned out to be fraudulent.
The PRP did not specify exactly how much the fraud scheme profited, but noted that victims “suffered significant financial losses” in the millions.
Two residents of Uxbridge, a small town about 75 km/h northeast of Toronto, were arrested on July 13 and charged with multiple counts of fraud, defrauding the public, issuing a false document, breach of trust and theft over $5,000. .
The first suspect is Kenneth Simpson, 77, who faces 30 charges. The second is Courtney Wallis-Simpson, 57, who faces 84 charges. The pair will appear in a Brampton courtroom on September 12.
The suspects are known to have operated in Southern Ontario, police said, so investigators are still looking for other victims.
“Investigators are dedicated to protecting individuals, groups and vulnerable people in our community. In many fraud cases, the PRP said, “people in vulnerable situations are coerced, manipulated and taken advantage of for the fraudster’s profit.”
