Two people are dead after a major crash on the Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, British Columbia
Another person was airlifted to a hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Pictures from the scene of the accident on Sunday morning showed heavy damage to two vehicles, with one car cut in half.
“The crash scene was extensive with significant damage to the vehicles on the road and in the bushes,” said BC RCMP spokesperson Dawn Roberts.
“One vehicle described as essentially split in two. Crews had to go into the bush to find those involved in this widespread wreckage and extract or extricate the people.

Police said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Lougheed Freeway was closed in both directions from 272nd Street to 280th Street for several hours overnight.

The causes of the crash are under investigation.
The highway was reopened around 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
