Two men were stabbed after an argument in front of a bar in the city center.

At around 7.35 pm, police received a signal that two men had been stabbed after an argument in front of Yates’ Wine Lodge, near Queen Square Bus Station. Emergency services were received and the two men were taken to hospital for treatment of stab wounds.

One man told ECHO that he saw two men lying on the floor and a group of about 12 to 15 people gathered around them. He said they were both taken to hospital in separate ambulances.

Yates officials are also said to have been among the people to help the two men, who remained lying on the street. The suspect, described as a black man with a thin figure and wearing a dark jacket, reportedly fled on foot towards Lime Street Station.

An investigation has been launched to locate the suspect, and officers remain at the Queen Square scene while extensive video surveillance, witnesses and forensic investigations are underway. Anyone who has witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact the police.

Roads are closed in the Queen Square area while investigations are underway. Detective Inspector Gavin Mulkahi said: “We are at a very early stage in the investigation into the stabbing tonight, in which two men were seriously injured.

“We simply will not tolerate such violence in the city center, and I want to assure everyone that we do not believe that there is a greater threat to people in the city center after this incident.

Queen Square incident

“Our officers are working tirelessly to find the person in charge and bring him to justice, and the police will remain on the scene tonight to conduct investigations and provide assurances. The area around Queen Square Bus Station would be extremely busy during the incident with people coming to town or traveling home.

“If you saw anything or someone suspicious in the area tonight, or if you filmed something on a control camera or other device, please let us know. At this early stage of an investigation like this, all the information, however insignificant it may seem, can be vital to our investigation.

“Don’t assume that someone else will tell us about what can be vital evidence – contact us and tell us what you know, directly or anonymously. We will never stand aside and allow people to carry knives and threaten the safety of themselves and others.

“With the help of the public, we can make Merseyside a safer place, and I urge anyone who has any information about the incident tonight to contact the police. If you have any information about this incident, please send a DM to our social media office on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook “Merseyside Police Contact Center”, citing reference number 22000361428.
