Two people are dead after a crash Saturday night in Maple Ridge

Two people are dead after a crash in Maple Ridge, British Columbia that closed the Lougheed Freeway at 280th Street overnight.

Dawn Roberts, BC RCMP spokesperson, said police received a call around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived at the scene to find a serious two-car crash.

“Numerous efforts were made on the ground to locate and extricate anyone who may have been involved,” she said. “Ultimately we pronounced two people deceased at the scene from one vehicle.”

“It was quite a significant scene as there was extensive damage to both vehicles and quite a wide field of debris,” added Roberts.

She said crews worked through the night to clear the scene and reopened the Lougheed Freeway around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Roberts said one of the cars was traveling eastbound when it collided with a vehicle traveling in the other direction, but the cause of the crash is not yet known.

She said the driver of the other car is expected to be OK.

“The only person in that vehicle was airlifted to hospital in what were described as serious but hopefully non-life threatening conditions,” she said.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are handling the investigation and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.
